Question 3:

Why is Bid Whist for Windows minimum bid a 4?

  • A minimum bid of 4 makes the game more challenging. No credible Bid Whist player allows a 3 or lower bid to stand. Bids lower than a 4 are simply signal bids. It tells your partner that you have a little something to help if they bid. When you have a bid less than 4, concentrate on setting your opponents.

Question 4:

Bid Whist playing varies around the country, what ways have Bid Whist for Windows adopted?

  • Bid Whist for Windows does not support all the variations of Bid Whist around the country.

    • Not practical to support all variations and some variations add no value to the game of Bid Whist. A lot of the variations are simply variations of the luck of the draw. The luck of the draw is the cards that a person receives, what cards their partner receives or what cards are in the kitty. Example, let's make the Deuce of spades the third joker because I feel lucky with the Deuce. This is the same as getting the Ace in the trump suit. The Ace is already the third joker. Professional Bid Whist players consider such variations to be gimmicks.
  • We should make something if we set our opponents.

    • No. For you to make something (10 books which is a 4 bid), your opponent would have to have taken a sacrifice bid. It is almost impossible for you to make something off of your opponent's bid. Your best odds, to make something, is for your opponents to take a NO bid and you get in with a suit they do not have. Bid Whist for Windows does not make sacrifice bids because there are challenges and satisfaction in setting your opponent's bid.
  • In a NO bid, Aces can not lead the first time a particular suit is played.

    • Bid Whist for Windows does not support this. This is simply saying, let's make the King an Ace in an uptown bid or make the Deuce an Ace in a low bid. This is an unnecessary gimmick. This could result in your opponents having a King or an Deuce in your lead suite and winiing that hand. Then your opponents could lead with a different suite that you do not have. You may never get your Ace to play.
  • The number of cards in the Kitty is 6, 5, 4 or none.

    • Bid Whist for Windows plays with a 6 card Kitty to give the bidder a small degree of luck.
  • Sporting the Kitty (show the Kitty to all players before the Kitty Exchange).

    • Bid Whist for Windows does not sport the Kitty. It gives the opponents an advantage. Especially in NO bids. This is an unnecessary gimmick that makes it unnecessarily hard for a player to make their bid. This takes the fun out of Bid Whist.
  • The Deuce of spades or some other card is considered the third Joker.

    • Bid Whist for Windows does not support this. This is a luck of the draw which is the same as being lucky enough to be dealt the Ace in the trump suit. This is an unnecessary gimmick.
  • State the end of a session for my opponents or me and my partner.

    • A session is how long you decide to play. There is no limit on sets or games to play in Bid Whist for Windows. Typically, with Bid Whist for Windows, most play the best out of 10 sets or they check their statistics via the Tutor and Player Statistics menus to see how they are doing. The best way to gauge yourself is to see if you can obtain a Bid Whist for Windows Certificate during a session.
  • A Boston wins a set even if you where in the hole.

    • Bid Whist for Windows counts a Boston as 7 books for a trump bid and 14 books for a NO bid. A Boston only counts as a set if you were not too deep in the hole. A Boston is a luck of the draw. You can not create a Boston; it must be dealt to you. This is normally played in "Rise and Fly" situations where time is limited.
  • In a NO bid, non bidders should trade in Jokers via the Kitty.

    • Bid Whist for Windows does not support this. It gives the opponents an advantage of seeing what suit the bidder does not want to come to the board. Especially in NO bids. This is an unnecessary gimmick that makes it unnecessarily hard for a player to make their bid. This takes the fun out of Bid Whist.
  • In a NO bid, the Joker must be played first, if you do not have the lead suit.

    • Bid Whist for Windows allows you to play a card from another suit or Joker when you do not have the lead suit. Not playing a Joker when you do not have a lead suit is amateurish. Because not playing a Joker, which has no value in a NO bid, over another card is not logical. However, a signal may be sent to your partner by playing a suit that you want to come to the board. This is only advisable when you are trying to set your opponents.
  • When bidding, a low may take out a high or vice versa.

    • Bid Whist for Windows only allows a NO bid to take out another bid of the same number. A 4 low can not take out a 4 high and a 4 high can not take out a 4 low. A 4 NO can take out a 4 low or a 4 high. A NO bid is harder to make than a low or high bid. This makes the game more challenging. There is no advantage or acquired difficulty in a low bid taking out a high bid or vice versa. However, you can have your intended result via our "Tutor" and "Allow You to Always Get the Bid" menus. This will give you the opportunity to play your bid in spite of what the other players have bidded.
  • When bidding, a player can announce their direction (low / high) before the bid is won.

    • Bid Whist for Windows does not announce the direction of the bidder before the bid is won. This is a way of sending a signal to your partner. Example, you bid a 4 low, now your partner knows that you have a low hand. This is unnecessary because you should be playing "Bid Whist" and not "Follow Whist".

Question 5:

What is the lead suit when a Joker leads and the bid is with NO trump?

  • The lead suit will be taken from the first non Joker played. Example, you lead with the Big Joker, the player on your left plays the Little Joker and your partner plays an Ace of hearts. The lead suit is hearts to the player on your right.

Question 6:

What strategies does Bid Whist for Windows use?

  • If partner A has secured the bid, partner B will not take out partner A (if partner B has the last bid).
  • Signals are recognized by your partner. A signal is playing a card in another suit other than the lead suit when you don't have that suit. Your partner will lead back to that suit when possible. This signal is only relevant on the first card you throw off or the last card you throw off. Anything between the first and last cards played, is simply the playing of your worst cards.
  • Players may skate sometimes. Skating is when you have the best card and you do not play it the first time. This allows your partner to get a cheap book.
